Jaradoa has teamed up with education consultants and public middle school teachers to use theater to improve students' reading and writing skills. Our workshops, classes and assemblies can be conducted in the classroom or in afterschool programs. Click here for a list of Jaradoa's Current Theater & Literacy Programs.
Here’s what Renee Houser of the Reading and Writing Program at Teacher's College, Columbia University, has to say about Jaradoa literacy programming:
“It has been so easy and effective to collaborate with the members of Jaradoa because their work putting a script onstage is exactly what we want our students to do in the classroom – lift the lines from the page and bring them to life. Students who once had fractured relationships with reading are beginning to understand the beauty of truly interacting with a text.”
When we ran our Play On! program at P.S. 206 in East Harlem, this is what we heard:
“Myself, even being an educator, I didn’t really see the value so much with arts in the schools. And I see it, very much so. Students who don’t necessarily shine in other aspects, they get to shine here.”
- Ms. Kibler, 5th grade teacher
“I got to do what I didn’t know I could do. I had the best time. It was amazing.” - Nicole, 5th grade student
We schedule student matinees of our productions with talk-backs after for the children we work with to attend our shows at no cost.
